Overview of NS Research
One
area of the research in children's kidney diseases, is study of the nephrotic
syndromes, one of the commonest childhood kidney problems. In this condition,
children leak key proteins from the blood into the urine due to a breakdown
of the kidney's ability to filter blood products. This leads to very significant
illness and often ultimately to kidney failure during childhood.
Our research uses new cell and molecular technologies to investigate the
particular cell that is responsible for the kidney's ability to filter proteins,
termed the podocyte.
